All of the United Kingdom’s National Action Plans (NAPs) on Women, Peace and Security are tri-departmentally owned between the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Department of International Development (DFID) and supported by the Stabilisation Unit. (It should be noted that after the publication of the fourth NAP, the FCO and DFID merged to form the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office).
The current NAP focuses on seven strategic outcomes: Decision-making, Peacekeeping, Gender-based violence, Humanitarian Response, Security and Justice, Preventing and countering violent extremism and finally UK capabilities. It is delivered globally but with a focus on nine countries: Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and one priority country Yemen.
The NAP was produced in collaboration with civil society and academics including the Gender Action for Peace and Security (GAPS) network of UK-based NGOs and the LSE Centre for Women, Peace and Security. The NAP development process included in-country civil society consultations in Afghanistan, Burma, Somalia and Syria to ensure the voices of women in fragile and conflict-affected states were included.
