In 2005, Denmark was the first country in the world to launch a National Action Plan (NAP) for the implementation of the United Nations’ Security Council’s Resolution) (UNSCR)1325 on Women, Peace and Security (WPS). Since then, Denmark has published further three NAPs (in 2008, 2014 and 2020). The NAPs have been developed and published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), the Ministry of Defense (MoD) and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the last of which is represented by the Danish National Police (DNP).

Denmark acknowledges the gap in women’s equal and meaningful participation in peace and security efforts and has throughout the last five years sought to reduce this gap.

The current WPS action plan has three main pillars:

  1. Denmark as a security policy actor
  2. Women’s participation in peace and security efforts
  3. Sexual and gender-based violence in conflict situations and efforts against sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment.

Denmark is currently developing its fifth WPS National Action Plan for the period 2025-2029.
